VITAMIN:
Hopkins discovered in
1912 that there are other nutrient required for optimal development in addition
to carbohydrates, protein and lipids. Despite the fact that these compound were
only required in modest amount., they were considered accessory Growth factor. These
compound were later given the name vitamin by Funk. Vitamin B1 (thiamin) was
discovered by him.
Types of
vitamin:
On the basis of solubility,
there are two types of vitamins.
1. WATER
SOLUBLE VITAMIN:
Those vitamin which are soluble in water are
called water soluble vitamin. These vitamin are obtained from cereals and fruit.
Generally, vitamin B(complex) and vitamin C are water soluble vitamin. These vitamin
are not stored in body if we take this vitamin in excess, they cannot harm us. Further,
these vitamin are easily excreted from our body.
2. FAT
SOLUBLE VITAMIN:
Those vitamin which are soluble in
fats and organic solvent are called fat soluble vitamin. Vitamin A,D(sunshine),E and K are fat soluble
vitamin and are stored in body for a long period these vitamin are obtained from
Lipids. If we take this vitamin they cannot harm us and cause diseases. For example
excess a vitamin A cause irritation and headache, vitamin D calcification and
pain in bones, vitamin E fatigue and headache and K liver and kidney disease.
